TRANAMPELO
The Vineyard
History
Dating back to the 1800s, our vineyard is located in Glinado, Naxos, in an area once known as Trana Ampelia (“Great Vines”) – reflecting the region’s long winemaking tradition.
After more than 50 years of dormancy, our family revived the vineyard in 2005. Inspired by the land’s history and promise, we named our vineyard Tranampelo. Honouring traditional local winemaking practices and guided by the island’s unique terroir, we selected the most representative indigenous grape varieties of Naxos and the Cyclades.
The low-yielding vines grow in sandy clay soil, rich in granite fragments and framed by rocky terrain, giving the land natural structure and character. Native herbs, fruit-bearing trees, roses, olive trees, prickly pears, and oleanders surround the vineyard, contributing to the wines’ distinct personality.
Varieties
We selected the most representative and indigenous varieties of vines from Naxos and the Cyclades for our vineyard, keeping in mind the local wine-making methods and the particular terroir and climate of the island.
Cultivation
Our vines are organically cultivated and non-irrigated, relying on scarce winter rainfall, nighttime humidity, and the gently salty morning mist of the Cyclades.
Sustainability
At Tranampelo Vineyard, we embrace a holistic, “zero-waste” philosophy. We strive to rediscover and produce as many vine by-products as possible, with a particular focus on grape molasses (“petimezi”), grape marc spirit (“strofilia”), and vinegar (“glykadi”). All our products and services are crafted with care, guided by a deep respect for nature.
A vegetable garden planted in the surrounding area enhances local biodiversity while providing fresh produce, primarily used in the gastronomic events and wine tastings we have been hosting since 2018.
